Kurunegala, Feb. 18 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that President Ranil Wickremesinghe is not a crafty man as claimed, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today he will have to go home even before the end of his scheduled term, if he attempts to evade the Presidential election by any means.
Speaking at the Kurunegala District Women's convention, he said a new discussion had arisen on the need to scrap the Executive Presidency and said it was an age-old slogan.
"Some people say Ranil is a crafty man. He became the President with a single seat in Parliament. He will do something to evade the Presidential election as well. Ranil is not a crafty man as claimed. He will have to go home even before his term of office, if he attempts to evade the Presidential election. Ranil was able to become the President just because Sajith Premadasa refused Gotabaya Rajapaksa's request to take up the Presidency. Otherwise, Ranil would be just an MP now. Gotabaya first requested Sajith and then Sarath Fonseka to take up the Presidency. Fonseka wanted three days to make a decision and Gotabaya was not in a position to delay it by three days. As the third option, he requested Ranil. He took it up as he had nothing to lose," Dissanayake said.
Dissanayake said Ranil was not a hero to take up the Presidency, but he should be ashamed of becoming the President with the votes of the MPs who were elected with a promise to jail Ranil for the Central Bank bond scam.
He said women will be a decisive factor in the upcoming elections and said they make up 56 percent of the votes in Sri Lanka.

Ranil is showing his hopelessness as time goes on. Any other competent person would do similarly to him, so Ranil has not done anything incredible. Only fools who voted for Gota would vote for Ranil, while all sensible persons would consider to vote for NPP.

Actually Interim President should be only for six months after that Election Commission must hold Presidential Election. That is the constitution.Citing No funds etc. lame excuse.All party Govt. means not all defectors get together and support Interim Govt.for perks privileges and ministerial posts.Constitution is not clay to mold according to politicians whims and fancies

RANIL was never popular with rural folks he contested biyagama And from Colombo District and he will never win elections again in SL. His party was reduced to one seat in the parliament. Just to give you an idea how much people in SL rejected him and his party well last general Elections in 2020 UNP received only 249,435 votes out of 16.2 million eligible voters That indicates how much people have rejected Ranil and UNP.

In 2002 when it was taken over from Chandrika (Only the Government not the executive) the country saw huge change. USD rate dropped, Democrazry was reinstated, Peace Accord was signed , we were able to Visit North for the first time, Regaining Sri Lanka programme was accepted by Work Bank and they came forward to support us .. a Lot of possitive things were hapenning. And then these so called Rascals striked a deal with Chandrika and abolished the elected government.. And we went 30 yaesr behind.. And the same Rascals who are responsible for it, now TALKING ..

AKD Must correct his statement! Gota never asked Sajith or Sarath Fonseka to take up the 'Presidency'. It was to take up the Prime Minister post as Mahinda stepped down. The selection of a person for the presidency in the Parliament after Gota left would have been a different story even if Sajith Or Sarath took up the PM post.

@Jude : Aside from Dudley Senanayake, I can't think of a single leader in this country post independence, that was able to engage with and be popular with both the rural folks and the Colombo folks with the same compassion and fairness. It's just not possible. Also, your reference to 2020 elections is irrelevant and quite honestly, stupid. It was a different era then. This is 2024 and people are different today. Put your personal prejudices aside and vote for who is good for the country - not necessarily for whom you personally like or dislike for whatever petty reason.
