Colombo, August 26 (Daily Mirror) - Prison Media Spokesperson Jagath Weerasinghe said today that it is unlikely former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court, due to ongoing medical treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital.
Wickremesinghe, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on August 22 under the Public Property Act over allegations of misappropriation of state funds, was initially remanded until today (26). However, shortly after his remand, he was admitted to the prison hospital and subsequently transferred to the ICU based on medical recommendations.
According to Weerasinghe, a committee of five specialist doctors is currently monitoring the former president’s health and is expected to make a formal recommendation on whether he is fit to be produced in court today.
“In the event that the Magistrate orders the former President to be produced via ZOOM or any other suitable method, the Department of Prisons is prepared to facilitate the necessary arrangements,” Weerasinghe said.
