Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne, who had been evading arrest for several days, appeared before the Colombo High Court today.
A notice had been issued ordering Senaratne to appear in court, after he was wanted by the Bribery Commission for questioning but repeatedly failed to respond to their summons.
In early August, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for his arrest following submissions made by the Bribery Commission. Investigators alleged that the former minister ignored multiple summons and avoided giving a statement regarding a controversial contract awarded during his tenure.
The case relates to a sand dredging project at the Kirinda Fisheries Harbour, which was awarded to a Korean company. According to the Bribery Commission, the deal resulted in a financial loss of over Rs. 20 million to the state.
Officials further reported that Senaratne had remained missing in recent weeks, with his phones switched off and his residence found empty, leading to allegations that he was deliberately evading arrest.
