Rainfall in hydro catchment areas still inadequate: Irrigation Dept.

Although heavy rainfall has been experienced in the country since last evening, the hydro catchment areas have not received significant rainfall, Irrigation (Hydrology) Director S.P.C. Sugeeshwara said.

He told the media that the water levels in the main rivers have not reached the threatening level likely to cause flooding.

However, with the higher rainfall expected in the coming days, there is a possibility of major rivers could swell and cause flooding, he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

This sounds like Hyrdo (renewable) power generation by way of water stored in dams is just not going to reliable for quite a while. Saw in latest budget government seeking more renewable sites, but whatever type they are renewable is vulnerable tot he fickleness of the weather. This lack of rainfall for cultivation is forever a concern. Surely there must be some time of better solution than how matters are managed now.

For heavens' sake please enlist Sri Lankan specialists in water management living in Sri Lanka AND overseas in to try and find ways of collecting all this rain water and regularly and systematically channelling it to these reservoirs. This is a permanent answer to this dreadful plight those living in 'flood prone' areas suffer. MM
