Colombo, June 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Railway Controllers’ Union has warned authorities not to take the ongoing 48-hour trade union action lightly, cautioning of wider disruptions if the railway work stoppage continues.
Although the initial emergency trade union action was called off, the ongoing strike has reportedly restricted both parcel and fuel transportation services across the railway network.
The disruption has raised concerns over potential knock-on effects on essential services, with reports warning that the transportation of aviation fuel by rail could also be affected, posing risks to the functioning of the aviation sector.
Union representatives said the current disruption could impact not only regular passenger services but also key national operations if it continues.
They said that a proper administrative framework, effective negotiation mechanisms, and responsible decision-making are essential to resolving ongoing labour disputes within the railway sector.
The union further said that if the crisis has resulted from administrative failure or an unresolved incident, authorities must immediately investigate and correct any shortcomings.
At a time when the railway sector is already facing multiple operational and administrative challenges, continued disruption of essential transport services could significantly affect passengers, public services, and broader economic activity.
The union has called on all relevant parties to act responsibly and urgently implement measures to ensure uninterrupted railway operations, while also urging the government to provide practical and timely solutions to outstanding labour issues.
