Colombo, Sep 16 (Daily Mirror) -The Road Development Authority (RDA) has commenced the systematic development of Sri Lanka’s 119,000-kilometre road network, including the modernization of rural roads in Pradeshiya Sabha areas with financial and technical assistance from the Authority, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena announced today.
The Deputy Minister made these remarks while inaugurating the development work on the Morapitiya–Aluthgamgoda road in the Agalawatte electorate, Kalutara District, under the ‘Punarudayata Maga’ national rural road development programme, which will modernize 100 rural roads.
He said the government had allocated Rs. 14 billion this year to improve rural roads that had remained neglected for many years, with more funding expected in the coming year.
“A year after coming into power, this government has achieved a significant transformation in economic, social, and political sectors. The opposition once claimed the National People’s Power had no foreign relations and could not secure deals, but today, by increasing foreign income, strengthening tourism, reducing state expenditure, and boosting national revenue, the country has advanced,” Dr. Gunasena said.
Highlighting the tourism sector’s progress, he noted that more than three million tourists had visited Sri Lanka this year, surpassing targets. He also assured that public servants now have the freedom to legally perform their duties, with the government ensuring protection for all officials who work within the law.
“The country that people expected is gradually being built. We invite everyone to join hands in implementing the government’s policy of ‘A Rich Country – A Beautiful Life’ to hand over a better nation to our children,” he added.
Road Development Authority Director General Wimal Kandambi, RDA officials, and local residents were also present at the event.
