Colombo, March 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Government is planning to introduce a special QR code system for individuals and institutions engaged in the tourism industry, Deputy Tourism Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe said.
Under the proposed initiative, all tourism service providers will be required to register with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), enabling authorities to verify registered operators and ensure better standards in the sector.
Prof. Ranasinghe said the QR code system will help identify officially registered tourism operators and ensure that tourists visiting the country receive proper services and facilities without inconvenience.
He also noted that a decline in tourist arrivals from Europe and the Middle East has been observed in recent months.
According to the Deputy Minister, many European tourists travel through Middle Eastern transit hubs using airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, which has influenced the flow of visitors from the region.
Prof. Ranasinghe further said that tourist arrivals from the Middle East have dropped by around 25 to 35 percent during the period of Ramadan.
He added that the ongoing conflict in parts of the Middle East has also contributed to the decrease in tourist numbers.
