Colombo, Feb 15 (Daily Mirror) - The fees for utilizing the public restroom facilities at Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand have been raised to Rs. 50 per person.

Previously, the lavatory usage fee was Rs. 20 per person, according to its maintenance personnel.

Subsequent to an agreement with the National Transport Commission office, the charges for toilet  facilities at Bastian Mawatha have been increased.

With the increase in the water tariff, the monthly water bill has increased to Rs. 175,000, and therefore, the toilet  facility charges have also been increased, they said.

Accordingly, the water bill has been increased by Rs. 60,000.

However, the public toilet facilities maintained by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) at Bastian Mawatha have not been revised, and the current charges are at Rs. 40 per person.

How come we are paying fees when in Modi’s India public lavatories in central locations and metro stations are free ?

    Wiseman Thursday, 15 February 2024 11:10 AM

Public Lavatories are not profit making ventures, since we pay VAT and also a income taxes, these services needs to be free for the public. Only a tip box should be there for the workers.

This is going too far. People should be able to attend to their needs at a reasonable cost. But, what can we expect from a sordid government that is hell bent on heaping misery on the people?

paying Rs.50 is no problem and acceptable charge, but if the toilets are maintained well and facilities are maintained, or else what we see is someone earning toilet charges into their pocket, cleanliness still the same as it was many years ago right? pee stench and ciggarettes and beedie smell, wet floors with pee all over, so what we have to just pay for the public water bill only?

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 15 February 2024 06:52 PM

There is no clean toilet concept here. Every where you go except 5 star hotels, the toilets are not clean.

Very few public toilets in Sri Lanka. Very few even in cities and hardly any on highways. So much so, some time ago, a European lady asked 'don't women go to toilet in Sri Lanka?' . Have at least two toilets within a small town, 2 for each 3 streets in big cities, one every 10 km on high roads. All attended 24 hrs a day by attendants and cleaned every 2 hours. Fix a Rs.10 coin operated entry system, so no one can steal 75% of collection. The positive word will spread and tourists will come in numbers.

Mr Punchi ,we are a wealthy nation ,so we can afford .

    VJ Thursday, 15 February 2024 09:23 PM

Our Rs.50 is only worth a pee. Let’s not complain, we can save the trees and the walls. The private bus terminal in Wattala needs a public toilet. You need to hold a handkerchief against your nose when entering the Arpico super center from the rear entrance.

Mohamed Burhan Friday, 16 February 2024 12:01 AM

To be honest I had been to a public toilet once in a way for an extreme emergency.toilets and inside vicinity is maintained reasonably ok.alright paying 50 Rs.Place is kept clean

The right dishonorable Ministers of Goo and Choo, have decreed that henceforth the population has to hold it in. Ministers and MPs because they have large rear ends may let it out for free.
