Colombo, May 7 (Daily Mirror) - Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IRES), Manjula Gajanayake, today urged the public not to vote for any political leader or party attempting to postpone elections, adding that voters have sent a clear message in this regard.
Addressing the media, Gajanayake said that the results of the 2025 Local Government elections clearly reflect the political transformation that has taken place since 2018.
He pointed out that political parties attempting to delay the election process have begun to fade from the political landscape.
Gajanayake also noted that the previous government, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe, attempted to postpone the local government elections. As a consequence, the United National Party (UNP) has performed poorly at the polls.
The best lesson can be learnt from this Local Government elections by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the United National Party (UNP) for attempting to postpone elections.
Gajanayake thanked the National People's Power (NPP) government for becoming the most favoured party among the people.
However, the results from the Northern and Eastern
Provinces show that Tamil political parties and politicians have managed to regain their lost reputation, the IRES Executive Director said.
