Public sector employees to get balance salary increment in January: President

Colombo, September 1 (Daily Mirror) - The government expects to provide the balance salary increment for the public sector employees in January 2026, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

Addressing the inauguration of the Jaffna Regional Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at the Jaffna District Secretariat, he said the initial increment of the basic salary was granted in April this year.

"We need a strong state sector to develop the country. There has been a strong public sector for every developed country. We will also create a strong public sector," he added.

Strong is a very vague term. Strength is defined by efficiency. Not by having a bloated and inefficient state sector. On entrances of highways, they have hired staff just to pass a piece of paper to the driver. This can easily be done with a tap of a button on a machine similar to older parking systems. Or scanning a QR at the entry and exit should be sufficient with a card payment terminal. A single person per toll is enough incase of system downtime. This would allow us to pay back loans for the highways built much faster as well.
