Colombo, April 10 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions when organizing and participating in Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities, citing the prevailing extreme hot weather conditions across the country.
Colombo National Hospital Sports Physician Dr. Ruwan Jayasuriya has advised that all outdoor sports activities should be scheduled and completed before 10 a.m. to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday, Dr. Jayasuriya highlighted concerns over traditional New Year events such as village sports meets, running competitions, and cycling events, which often take place during peak heat hours.
“The problem with the upcoming New Year celebrations is that there are mass sports including village running and cycling competitions. We would like to tell those organizing those events to choose the right time of day and to end outdoor activities by 10 a.m. Evenings are more suitable after 3 p.m.,” he said.
He further highlighted the importance of proper hydration for participants and awareness of early warning signs of heat stress, including abnormal muscle twitching and excessive fatigue.
“When such symptoms occur, individuals should immediately stop activity, seek shelter, and drink cool water to help lower body temperature,” he added.
Dr. Jayasuriya also urged event organizers to ensure adequate facilities are in place, including access to cool drinking water and ice, to help prevent heat-related health risks during celebrations.
