Colombo, July 11 (Daily Mirror) - A project to develop three sports grounds in the Mullaitivu District to national standards was launched today with the laying of foundation stones under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage and Vanni District MP Dr. Sellaththamby Thilakanathan.
The project aims to upgrade the selected grounds with running tracks, athletics facilities and other modern infrastructure to improve sports opportunities for young athletes in the district.
Addressing the event, Minister Gamage said the government is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for youth across the country, adding that sports infrastructure should be developed in all districts, regardless of geography.
He said the initiative is part of a nationwide programme to decentralise sports development and provide athletes from every region with access to quality training facilities.
Vanni District MP Dr. Thilakanathan described the project as the largest sports infrastructure development initiative implemented for Mullaitivu's youth in decades, noting that it would help promote healthy lifestyles, discipline and national unity.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Sports, local political representatives, district sports officers, schoolchildren and athletes attended the inauguration ceremony.
