Colombo, September 17 (Daily Mirror)- The Colombo Fraud Investigation Division today informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva that an investigation has been launched into the alleged misappropriation of 75 metric tons of Basmati rice imported from a Pakistani company, valued at Rs. 27.41 million without making due payments.
The inquiry has been initiated based on a complaint lodged by Javad Mushaffar, Director of White Pearl Rice Mill Limited, Pakistan.
Presenting facts before court, the Division stated that the consignment was imported under the government’s special quota issued in February 2024 for rice imports and subsequently cleared through Customs by two Sri Lankan companies authorised by the Department of Commerce.
Police further informed court that investigations are underway to identify the responsible parties.
According to the agreement entered into with the Pakistani company, 25 metric tons of Basmati rice, valued at USD 30,875, Rs. 9,262,500 had been shipped on April 3, 2024.
A further 50 metric tons, valued at USD 60,500 Rs. 18,150,000 had been shipped on May 16, 2024.
It was revealed that the payments due for these consignments had not been made, prompting the Pakistani national to lodge the complaint.
