Private O/L candidates without NICs can apply using guardian’s NIC

Colombo, July 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Examinations said that private candidates sitting for the 2026 G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination who have not yet obtained a National Identity Card (NIC) may apply for the examination using their guardian's NIC number.

Issuing a special announcement today, the Department said the absence of an NIC will not prevent eligible candidates from submitting their applications before the deadline.

The Department had earlier announced on July 3 that applications for the 2026 G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination would be accepted online until July 23, 2026.

It said special instructions have already been sent to school principals regarding school candidates who have not yet received their NICs by the application deadline.

Similarly, private candidates without NICs have been allowed to register using their guardian's NIC number when submitting their applications.

The Department said that the application deadline will not be extended under any circumstances and urged all candidates to submit their applications on or before July 23, in accordance with the examination guidelines.

Candidates requiring further information may contact the Department's hotline 1911 or call 0112-784537, 0112-786616, 0112-784208, or send inquiries via fax to 0112-784422.
