Parliament, Feb. 22 (Daily Mirror)- Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane assured Parliament that an inquiry will be held into the statement made by the CEB media spokesman and necessary action will be taken against him.

The Prime Minister told Parliament that instructions have been given to respective authorities to take disciplinary action against the media spokesman after an inquiry.

He said this in response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa that action must be taken against the CEB spokesman who had said that children should study under the light of oil lamps.

The Opposition Leader added that the spokesman also had stated that men in estates consume booze after 2 pm and that it was an insult to the estate community.

He urged the government to interdict the spokesman and launch an inquiry.

There is nothing sinister or vulgar about anything the CEB spokesperson said . Studying is so important that there is no harm done in studying under the oil lamp, that was how all the ancient thinkers , scientists , mathematicians, and philosophers studied. And all our modern knowledge is based and built on the work of those people. What the CEB spokesperson was saying had this context and what he said was expected to be understood not literally but metaphorically. Secondly it is absolutely true that the Upcountry Indian Tamil estate workers are mostly drunk after 2pm, and then follows domestic violence. We must learn to respect honest people who speak the truth and disregard all those pretending to be honest.

A generation of students studied under oil lamps in the North and East not so long ago.

    Jeanne Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:28 PM

Get over it Raj .... minorities in India and China are still being treated like animals. Stop bleating. This generation of students is now thriving and have moved on to bigger and better things. Difference is, it was a necessity back then - to suggest that this comment is somehow an acceptable comment is stupid.

All these critics are expressing opinions on a particular words but not the context where the meaning is to use alternative method to study if no power is not available what that spokesman did. All these opposition due to vendetta . In reality when power cuts were there the students studied with candles, oil lamps etc. Only way to reply to these miserable fellows the power cut should have extended without being given now, to see what they would use for children to study Come on the folks commented let us see their answer I am quite sure none would do? That pundit media journalist should be sacked instead of CEB spokesman

I see no harm in what was reportedly stated by the CEB man. First thing is it is his personal view made at a private forum. He cannot be prosecuted for having his individual opinion at variance with the government policy. Secondly, there is nothing wrong in resorting to oil lamps for studies. I studied under oil lamps until I entered university. So had many of my batchmates. We did not feel underprivileged for all that. Let us face the reality. If we cannot illuminate every household, then let us go back to other sources. Then let us conserve energy where ever possible, cutting down on garish illuminations of bridges, Lotus Tower and other places.
