Prices of meals for Parliamentary staff to be hiked from June 1

Colombo, May 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Parliamentary House Committee has decided to increase the prices of meals for the Parliamentary staff with effect from June 1, 2025, the Communications Department of Parliament said.

Accordingly, the Committee has decided to charge Rs. 4,000 per month for an Executive Grade Officer and Rs. 2,500 per month for a Non-Executive staff member.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Parliamentary House Committee held on May 23, 2025 under the patronage of the Chairman of the Committee, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, to review the decision taken at the meeting of the Parliamentary House Committee held on May 21 2025 to revise the rates charged for meals for the Executive Grade Officers and Non-Executive staff members of Parliament.

The Committee further decided that the current rates charged for meals purchased from the Parliament Staff Cafeteria by the drivers of Members, Police Officers, President, Prime Minister's Security Officials and journalists should remain unchanged.

The revision of these rates is a decision taken once every three years on the request of the Parliament staff based on the recommendations made by the Ministry of Finance regarding the cost of meals provided to the Parliament staff.

Let them pay more as people do: they should not jolly ride in public money and all of them must pay the tax as people do: after all it is people pay for them : let them work for the money they earn: our MPs have been enjoying luxury life through public money and public put them on their posts and yet they exploited this post of MP and let them now see the difference in NPP government: MP post is not to jolly ride but to provide some service : the fault of our democracy is that we don’t elect good people. For sure our MPs and Ministers work for the salaries they receive! Most gets none (all goes to the party) and others ‘sochcham’ i.e. minute. So there WORK is also none or ‘sochcham’! Meaning we the public too get low quality contributions. Look at the crises we have. Shortages, deadly accidents, underworld crime, youth suicide, strikes, ministers talking out of turn and resulting embarrassments etc. etc.

WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW IF THIS PRICING IS FOR ALL THREE MEALS OR ONLY WHEN ON DUTY?. JUST TRYING TO WORK OUT WHAT THE COST OF A MEAL IS, ALSO CAN THEY GET TAKE AWAYS TOO?.

Very reasonable amount. RS 4000 for main meals, tea , coffee for 20 days a month is really good. Why Sajith was making an issue for this? Parliament staff need to come for work 5 days a week. So gor 4 weeks they will work for 20 days a month.

The general public should not be subsidizing meals for any parliamentary staff member. Channel those funds to where it's required, like healthcare, education etc.
