Colombo, March 31 (Daily Mirror) - The All Island Canteen Owners' Association (AICOA) has decided to increase the price of a cup of tea by Rs. 10 from tonight.

AICOA President Harshana Rukshan told the Daily Mirror that the decision was made due to the failure to reduce milk powder prices.

Recently, milk powder importers increased the maximum retail price of a 400g milk powder packet by Rs. 50.

"As an association, we tried to have a discussion with the Trade Minister regarding this issue and requested his intervention to control the price increase. Unfortunately, we were not even given an opportunity to meet him," Rukshan said.

Therefore, the association has decided to increase the retail price of a cup of milk tea by Rs. 10.

Meanwhile, the AICOA announced that, in response to the milk powder price hike, the price of all milk-based beverages, including milk tea, will also be increased by Rs. 10 from tonight.

Additionally, Rukshan said that the prices of several food items made with milk, including cheese and kottu, will also be increased by Rs. 10.

Rukshan also claimed that no regulation has been issued to control the price of a cup of tea in the market, with prices ranging from Rs.65 to Rs.130.

Our sweet President will invite the tea canteen owners to the table and the he will preach them some good advice and he is more likely to hit the table during this meeting ans agree another Rs 10 increase.

Amount of milk powder per cup – Typically, 2–3 teaspoons (5–10g) of milk powder are used per cup of tea. Estimate: If using 5g per cup: 80 cups If using 10g per cup: 40cups lets take 10G per cup 10x40 = 400. The price of milk powder 400g pack is only Rs.50. This is not a fair increase by Canteen Owners.

Sure, fine. This is a cartel. The PHI's should enforce all the respective health rules making these cups of tea and other food items sold by the canteen owners too.

People really shouldn’t have this ‘tea’ ! It’s gonna have so much milk powder, they won’t be able to swallow it! It would be like drinking condensed milk.

Why do our people drink this terrible milk tea!? It's neither tea nor milk, just mix of whiting powder tea . Find and drink cup of milk, but even cubs dose not drink milk after certain age. Time to think

In USA Starbucks sell its beverages around $4-5, which feels an exorbitant price for a Sri Lankan like me. So I take my own cup of tea or coffee when I go on trips. Sri Lankans should do the same and teach these guys a lesson.
