Colombo, Dec. 16 (Daily Mirror) - The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has confirmed that all previously identified landslide and rockfall risk areas have now subsided.
NBRO Director General, Engineer Dr. Asiri Karunawardena, said that a total of 1,247 high-risk areas had been identified across the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Kurunegala provinces following the heavy rains brought by Cyclone Ditwa.
“All areas previously marked as vulnerable due to the cyclone’s impact have stabilized,” Dr. Karunawardena noted, adding that efforts are now focused on identifying new potential landslide and rockfall risk zones.
As part of preventive measures, the NBRO has begun removing loose rocks from areas prone to rockfalls. The organization continues to monitor geological anomalies in districts including Kandy, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Kegalle, and Kurunegala.
Dr. Karunawardena emphasized the ongoing importance of vigilance, stating that continuous monitoring and mitigation are essential to prevent future disasters.
