“President’s fund to support education of migrant workers’ children”

Colombo, Sept. 8 (Daily Mirror) - The President’s Fund has announced plans to launch a scholarship programme to support the education of children in Sri Lanka whose parents working overseas have died, become disabled, gone missing, or faced other hardships, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The initiative, guided by the concept of “Leaving no one behind in education,” will be jointly implemented by the President’s Fund, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

The programme was revealed during a recent discussion at the Presidential Secretariat chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, with Senior Additional Secretary to the President and Secretary to the President’s Fund Roshan Gamage also in attendance.

Officials said the sole eligibility criterion for the scholarships will be that the recipient is a Sri Lankan. Detailed guidelines on awarding the scholarships will be released in due course.

The President’s Fund already operates a similar programme for children of victims of wild elephant attacks and aims to expand such welfare initiatives into other areas in the future.
