Colombo, May 2 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged trade unions not to take to the streets, in protest for petty demands and has called on them to change their old attitudes.
In his May Day speech, President Dissanatake said that the NPP as a political force, has given up perks and privileges entitled to them through the constitution, gazettes and circulars.
"We urge trade unions to shed their old attitudes. Do not fight even for petty things. We, as a political force, have given up perks and privileges entitled to us through the constitution, gazettes and circulars. Let us have some time. You don't have to take to the street and force us. We are a political force that feel your heartbeat and aspirations," he said.

After tasting success with the middle class, the JVP is ready to shed the trade union and student union goblins who carried them on their shoulders for decades. A pivotal moment in SL politics.

Pacha Kumara no action Pacha talking only. Pacha Kumara has become dancing puppet of Usuf and Hulangona. Nandalal was the deputy of Arjuna Mahendran during the bond scam.

Now the robber barons who bankrupted the country are out of limelight , there is no need to make unnecessary protests. The President is absolutely correct.

TO THE UNION HEADS, STAY THE COURSE AND ALL WILL BE WELL. THE PAST IS HISTORY NOW IT IS TIME TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE REST OF THE PEOPLE. Saturday, 03 May 2025 08:39 AM
UNIONS HAD TO STAND UP, AS MAJORITY OF MEMBERS WERE LEFT BEHIND WITH NO EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, NO PROPER MEDICAL SERVICES, LEFT OUT OF EMPLOYMENT TO FEED THE STOOGES IN PUBLIC SERVICE WHO ASSISTED THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS TO KEEP FEATHERING THEIR NESTS BASICS WERE NON EXISTANT IN RURAL VILLAGES ETC. FINALLY THEY HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE IN A GOVT WHO HAS PROMISED TO TAKE FORWARD, SO THEY CAN UPLIFT THEIR LIVES TO SOME EXTENT. TRAINING CENTRES ARE VITAL FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE USE OF THEIR CAPABILITIE, IT IS NOT POSS FOR THEM TO AFFORD TRAVELLING, FOOD/DRINKS,ACCOMMODATION ETC TO CENTRES TOO FAR TO TRAVEL AND OR NO PROPER PUBLIC SERVICE EITHER.

A HONEST request from the President, the people must remember what the PRESENT GOVT has given up in order to PROVE to the majority that they are in govt to rule in the best interests of the country and all its people and not for a selected class. The majority of people know this PRESIDENT/NPP, his GOVT and ADVISORS know the majority of people were left behind in the past decades with NO VOICE, this GOVT has heard the people, know their sufferings, struggles and has assured the people he will take the past on board and will act accordingly.

NO CLOSING SHOP, JUST STAY THE COURSE THE PRESIDENT/GOVT AND ADVISORS ARE WALKING ON. MAJORITY OF THE POOR, DISADVANTAGED, THOSE LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LINE ETC ARE IN ALL UNIONS AROUND THE WORLD (NOTHING NEW), WITH THE PRESENT GOVT THEY HAVE HOPE A GOVT THAT REALLY CARES FOR THE MAJORITY WHO HAVE BEEN LEFT BEHIND FOR WAY TO LONG.

Why didn't your party, the JVP and you request the trade unions, almost all of which are affiliated with or sympathetic towards you , request them not to strike on trivial demands when they were on strike in the past inconveniencing people especially patients rendering their lives at risk and this game is Dr.Jackill and Mr.Hyde in its worst form.

Must be a belated April 1st joke as JVP protested for everything under the son for last 40 yrs to disrupt all governing parties in power even during covid. SL public must demand compensation for time, money lost by JVP instigated political protests, agitations, work disruptions

You are right Mr President, Why not create the atmosphere for the protestors to meet the relevenat Minister, handover their Memo, and the Ministry to give a date for the protestors to meet the minister to itheir memo? This way the protestors can be desciplined and their needs can be attended fast

Pretty disappointed with the NPP May Day rally to see them still leaning towards COMMUNISM with representatives from the Chinese Communist Party (CPA) and representatives from the Indian Communist Unions invited on stage. They must understand the vote for the NPP was NOT a vote for COMMUNISM by the people of this country, They rejected Wijeweera and will do so again for NPP if they go down this road. CPA is like a cancer will spread if given an opening.

Now he doesn't care about the country or the trade unions. He has got the supreme power one and for all. Only he has to fool the people of his class and by the time. Once his term is over he will be gone. I'm sure AKD is the agent whom they were calling others to be. One his mission accomplished his followers will be begging for life.

This kind of celebrating a May Day is a joke. In almost all other countries it’s not even a public holiday. You bus in crowds from all over the island, put them on the Galle Face Greens (violating a very good decision taken recently not to use that place for political functions) and make some empty speeches to show their strength. In the process you violate all expressway traffic regulations, pollute the environment and at the same time put your supporters in utter discomfort. Haven’t we learnt a lesson on the emptiness of this stupid exercise of power? This applies not only to NPP/JVP but to all political parties.

The opposition is trying all their tricks to slow down the progress of the country. For 76 years they did the same. We didn't achieve anything during this period. The NPP has to first recover the country from it and then develop the country from scratch.

All comments here have some relevance. However, the trade Unions and 'associations' like the bus operators, canteen owners, three wheeler owners, egg producers etc., are not trade unions but, cartels. These are 'capitalist' owners and businessmen's 'unions'. There is a big difference. They are instigated by the SLPP, SJB, UNP, SLFP, et.al. to create havoc and bring discredit to the government. Some of the commentators in here are shedding crocodile tears. We are in a hole together created by the previous crooks. We all have to attempt to get out of this collectively. Students also should realize that they have received a free education and a degree. Finding a job is mostly their responsibility. It is not a birth right or a human right. Right Call Mr President. It is the need of the hour. Most Trade unionists work in loss making enterprises and seldom do an honest day's work and want everything for nothing. True they have been exploited in the past but many have been placed in jobs as political rewards.Their productivity is abysmal especially in govt service. They must instead focus on the new technologies automation and AI that is fast emerging as a threat to the workforce. The ideals of socialism and Communism are long gone. It is an era where there is no Free Lunch but you got to earn it. Stop complaining and work harder to pull the country out of this mess.
