President seeks swift completion of university degrees

Colombo, Oct. 20 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has called on the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) to develop a comprehensive plan to address delays in university degree programmes and improve the overall functioning of higher education institutions.

Speaking at a meeting with FUTA representatives this morning (20) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President emphasized the need for a strategy that ensures timely completion of degree programmes, efficient management of accumulated workloads, and stronger research and development initiatives. He assured that the government will provide the necessary facilities to implement the plan.

FUTA representatives highlighted several challenges faced by universities, including delays in programme completion, difficulties in recruiting and retaining academic staff, and the need for measures to enhance the quality of higher education. The President urged swift action to address these issues, emphasizing that systemic reforms are essential for strengthening the university system.

How ironic, thanks to the JVP's insurgency and instigating strikes the Degrees that took 4 years to complete took us close to 6 years. Now they want to ensure degrees are completed on time. Have they decided to stop politicising education.

Please take off many arts degrees such as fine arts, history, logics, sociology, philosophy and many more degrees are not for our time : include some useful apprenticeship courses to give jobs for our people : Some schools are overcrowded with arts teachers and they don’t have any jobs

It is a well-known fact that the trade union actions of both academic and administrative staff, along with student protests, are the major reasons for delays in the awarding of university degrees. This situation is rarely seen in our neighboring countries such as India, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Consequently, the young people in those countries are more competitive and actively engaged in nation-building from an early age, which contributes to their rapidly growing economies. If we are truly committed to nation-building, we must develop and hand over a sutainalbe plan for implementation to President AKD at the earliest opportunity. I am confident that he will take the necessary steps in the best interests of the youth of our country.

Ah, yes — how noble of us to suddenly remember nation-building now that the same government (which conveniently presided over countless university shutdowns and delayed graduations) is in the picture again. Because clearly, the best way to “empower youth” is to first derail their education for years and then deliver heartfelt speeches about competitiveness and economic growth. Truly inspiring consistency.

It is not just about completing degrees on time, it is more about producing relevant and job-related degrees with English language skills. Divert funds allocated to those useless degrees to more useful ones, including for some technical courses. Many of the degrees produced by SL universities are useless, specially in Arts stream and they all start protesting in front of Railway station demanding government jobs. Once they get a government job, they become utterly unproductive and lethargic and start idling in their offices eating beetle leaves. First thing is to change the school curriculums and only teach job-related subjects in A/L. They has become a vicious circle.
