Katunayaka, July 31 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (30), concluding a three-day official visit to the Maldives.

The President, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath and several senior government officials, arrived at the Airport at 10:05 p.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-104 from Malé, the Officer-in-Charge at the Airport said.

The delegation had departed for the Maldives on the morning of July 28 for the official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations.

Appointing a head to RTI council, expediting Easter attack probes, catching the Rajapakse clan for mega corruption and ensuring an accelerated economic growth of 5% , reducing poverty level etc. What have you achieved by your German visit and this Maldives visit other than extending visa periods?

Why is the when the president goes on an official visit/returns, it is like a national event? When leaders of other countries travel on official business no one knows and no one cares. In Sri Lanka it is like they are going for a war and returning victorious, What the taxpayer really should know is what is the purpose of the visit, what are the benefits to the country and how much the whole thing cost the taxpayer. In responsible countries this information is recorded as a matter of public accountability. In Sri Lanka all you see is pompous ceremonies and meaningless funfair.
