Colombo, April 27 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said an international cricket stadium will be constructed in the north.
Addressing an electoral rally in the north in view of the Local Government elections, he said the first match will be played soon after that, enabling the people to cheer in the pavilion irrespective of any divisions among them.
Earlier, the 1996 World Cup winning Sri Lankan cricket team requested Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assist in the construction of a cricket ground in Jaffna.

You are speaking as if all the issues faced by people in the North (and South) have been resolved, and the only remaining concern is the construction of an international cricket stadium! Could you first release all our land so that we can resume our livelihood activities? Furthermore, before investing in more infrastructure for cricket, please ensure that the Sri Lankan team actually performs well on the international stage and there is a balance ethnic representation in the team. You and the NPP are still talking and behaving as if you are in the opposition. It is high time you took matters seriously and started delivering. Mr President - please come to your senses . The people of the North and East need the following, 1) Release all political prisoners and give an answer to the disappeared, 2) Release all private lands occupied by the very high number of the forces, 3) Restart building KKS cement factory for unemployed Tamils, Paranthan chemicals. 4) Upgrade Palaly airport for international flights to connect with East and West, increase employment, Ease of international travel, increase the economy of the country. Unfortunately you have been very late in promising these needs. I very much regret, having known the pulse of the people NPP is going to fare badly in N and East.

Good announcement but poor timing. Shouldn't have made the commitment shortly before an election. That is what the past leaders did. AKD was to introduce a new culture. He introduced a new/good culture in some areas but this announcement is made at a wrong time.

Since independence from UK, the North was continuously ignored. Even I read messages here that there is opposition to developing Jaffna Airport further? Why? It is time not just Cricket field, there needs to be other developers brought in to do developments for increased job opportunities. You need to resolve the long outstanding constitutional issues to invite foreign developers. Without this fear won't encourage foreign investors.

Sri Lanka is still within the IMF programme and facing an uphill task in achieving rapid economic growth, boosting foreign reserves, generating employment, servicing debts, etc. With all these macroeconomic issues remain unaddressed, the NPP government's priority for the north is to build an international cricket stadium!
