Colombo, April 19 (Daily Mirror)- General Secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arachu Katchi (ITAK) M.A. Sumanthiran said it is highly regrettable that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has chosen to repeatedly offer bribes to voters by stating that funds will be more easily allocated to councils governed by the ruling National People's Power (NPP) and not to others.
This is false as it is an election offence, he said in a post on X.
He was responding to remarks made by the President in his electoral addresses to garner the support of voters for the NPP candidates at the upcoming local authorities' elections.
Where is evidence President did as claimed Saturday, 19 April 2025 12:13 PM
This M.A. Sumanthiran is not even a MP anymore, but he is lawyer, so without any evidence he still slanders the AKD. Who has recording of the President saying such? AKD, and NPP should take Sumanthiran to court over this statement.

May I just put this debate to rest because I vividly remember his words after listening to the Hon President several times. He said (in person in his own voice) people should vote for the NPP in the forthcoming elections if they want funds for their councils to be approved (fast) because if it was a NPP governed council the central government could release funding with their eyes closed while if it was not a NPP governed council they will think ten times because the opposition is corrupt and might waste or steal the central government’s hard earned revenue base. If this is not what he said and if I am telling an untruth please someone help me with the President’s correct words as we expected absolute integrity from him compared with our previous leaders. NPP has set very high standards for them and there can’t be any confusion on this important matter.

Well, hook or by crook , NPP trying to get votes from North and East. People Nand E voted 1) Release all political prisoners,2) Release all private lands from army occupation, 3) Abolish PTA, 4) Reinstate abandoned factories, 5) Upgrade Palaly airport to international standards for East West travel and for local jobs ,to improve economy and connectivity. NPP going to fail inspire of threatening the North and East. All are aware, unless its two states in one country. Sri Lanka will never ever solvee ethnic crisis

You are finding it difficult to accept the fact that for the first time in the post independent history of Sri Lanka the Jaffna Tamils have rejected the Tamil political parties and have embraced a Sinhalese political party from the South. Who can blame the Jaffna Tamils when half the Tamil political parties were LTTE sympathisers and the other half Indian stooges. The fact is Jaffna Tamils believe in Tamil Nationalism but they totally reject the LTTE and the Indian involvement in Tamil affairs .

The Jaffna Tamils voted forAKD, he promised to release all political prisoners and release the private lands. Tamils have been duped. Never ever trust any Sinhala party. Two states in one country is the goal.

Wrongly misinterpreted completely. If what Mr president says is true, the he is WORKING FOR all and not a few smugglers looters and scoundrels who will squander the funds.

Insider Sunday, 20 April 2025 09:44 AM
No it is the other way round. He is trying his best to protect the people of the whole country from taxpayers money being squandered or looted by the former clique. All local bodies were dens of thieves giving contracts to kith and kin or taking hefty bribes so the work suffered by being substandard.

dds Saturday, 19 April 2025 02:14 PM
We already know what happened to most of the money allocated to those councils so voters should be coaxed into making the right decision if they don't want thieves to come back to power.

Sumanthiran, You are a Senior lawyer and a PC. You know what can be done if the President said such a thing. You can challenge all NPP winning Councils aon this election violance by filing action after election to unseat them. Your principal witness will be a recording of what President said. You are only attempting to put fear pcychsis to votes. Your present action will not succeed

Come on, has anyone ever seen the President make the remarks? Where's the video evidence. And video by itself cannot be trusted, as AI generated fake video can be created easily by the experts for the right price.

All Mr. Prez AKD said is that it's easy to allocate govt funds if their own party members are elected coz of trust. Other party members probably swindle based on history. How can that be a bribe? Go back to school!

STOP SPREADING FAKE NEWS Saturday, 19 April 2025 06:07 PM
GENERAL SECRETARY, PLEASE DO NOT SPREAD FAKE FALSE NEWS. THE PRESIDENT HAS CLARIFIED HIS STANCE, MAYBE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE SINHALA LAUNGAGE IS LIMITED. THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T NEED TO OFFER ANY BRIBES, THE MAJORITY OF US HAVE SEEN HOW THE GOVERNMENTS FOR DECADES HAVE NEGLECTED THE POOR PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY, ENDING WITH EVEN THE RICH AND MIDDLECLASS PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY TO SUFFER WITH THE COUNTRY GOING INTO BANKRUPTSY. THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE LEFT BEHIND MUST BE ELEVATED AND ONLY THE PRESIDENT AND HIS PARTY CAN ACHIEVE THIS CRY OF THE POOR AND DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY. HOWEVER, WHAT THE MAJORITY OF US WANTED AND CONTINUE TO WANT IS ALL CORRUPTION MUST BE WIPED OUT OF POLITICS AND OR ANY GOVT DEPT OR BODY AND THEREFORE IF ANY COUNCIL IS FOUND TO MISAPPROPRIATE FUNDS ALLOCATED TO THEM WILL BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY.

JRDW Saturday, 19 April 2025 06:10 PM
What he said was he will allocate funds to the NPP councils immediately as if the top is not cheating then the bottom cannot cheat at all. But he said he will allocate to other parties too but he will ensure 10 times it's checked before any funds released.

Sumanthiran got his PC during Yahapalana government when his TNA pledged support to the government. Hence, I don't know whether he is a clever lawyer or not. But as a Physics graduate of Madras University, a lawyer from Colombo Law College and with a good command of english, he should be of a good standard but he can never be compared to legal grants of the past like EB Wicks, S Nadesan, P Navaratnarjah, C Thiagalingam, N K Choksy etc..
