President holds talks with Qatar Emir over regional tensions

Colombo, March 19 (Daily Mirror) - Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a phone conversation with His Highness the Emir of Qatar to discuss the regional situation and its wider implications, the President’s Media Division said.

During the call, President Dissanayake inquired about the well-being of the approximately 150,000 Sri Lankans living in Qatar, expressing solidarity and support for the Qatari state amid ongoing developments. The Emir briefed the President on prevailing conditions and assured that all residents, including Sri Lankan nationals, remain safe.

The leaders also addressed broader challenges arising from the tensions, including potential disruptions to global supply chains and energy markets, particularly risks affecting strategic maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. President Dissanayake stressed the importance of international coordination to mitigate economic impacts, especially on developing nations like Sri Lanka, in light of rising energy costs.

Reaffirming Qatar’s role as a stable energy partner, the Emir emphasized the country’s commitment to ensuring continuity of supplies despite the current challenges. Both leaders expressed concern over the broader implications for regional and global stability and underscored the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, halt further military actions, and pursue diplomatic solutions through dialogue.

President Dissanayake reiterated Sri Lanka’s support for peaceful engagement as the only viable path toward lasting stability.
