President discusses Negombo Prison unrest with prison officials



Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today held discussions with senior officials of the Department of Prisons, with special attention given to the recent unrest at the Negombo Prison and measures needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat, was attended by Superintendents of Prisons, Jailers and other prison officials.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), extensive discussions focused on the challenges currently facing the prison system and the urgent measures required to address them.

The recent Negombo Prison incident was a key topic of discussion, with the President and prison officials holding lengthy talks on steps to avoid similar occurrences in the future.

The meeting also addressed challenges faced by prison officers and matters relating to their welfare.

Prison officials told the President that it was the first time they had been given an opportunity to directly discuss their concerns with the Head of State and expressed their appreciation for the meeting, the PMD said.
