President accelerates push for Customs digitization

Colombo, July 8 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to fast-track the digitization of the Sri Lanka Customs Department, highlighting it as a priority for establishing a digital economy by 2030.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting held this afternoon (8) at the Presidential Secretariat with senior Customs officials, where challenges in the current customs processes and the slow pace of technological transformation were brought to the fore.

The President emphasized the urgent need to amend outdated legislation that hinders the department’s digital transition. He identified legal reform as a critical step in overcoming long-standing institutional bottlenecks.

A key part of the discussion centered on the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA), its limitations, and the implementation of the National Single Window service. The meeting also addressed concerns related to the accurate recording of imports and exports, the granting of tax exemptions, and the effective identification of government revenue.

Officials presented a review of the digital measures already in place and assessed the progress made so far. The President reiterated the importance of digitalization not just as a tool for efficiency, but as an essential part of broader economic reform.
