Colombo, June 10 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has extended warm congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the history of India.
In a congratulatory message, President Dissanayake said that Sri Lanka values its close partnership with India and looks forward to further strengthening the enduring ties between the two neighbouring nations.
Prime Minister Modi achieved the historic milestone on June 10, 2026, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office since first taking the oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014. In doing so, he surpassed the record held by Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as India’s elected Prime Minister from May 13, 1952, to May 27, 1964, for a total of 4,398 days.
The achievement is regarded as particularly significant given the scale and complexity of governing India, a nation of more than 1.4 billion people with vast linguistic, cultural, religious and geographic diversity.
Observers note that at a time when many countries have experienced political instability, frequent leadership changes and policy uncertainty, India has witnessed continuity in governance under Modi’s leadership, reflecting sustained public support across three consecutive national mandates in the world’s largest democracy.
Prime Minister Modi has consistently ranked among the world’s most popular democratic leaders in international surveys and has received the highest civilian honours from more than 30 countries.
His political journey—from a modest socio-economic background to the highest elected office in India without the backing of a political dynasty—is widely viewed as a testament to the opportunities provided by India’s democratic system.
During his tenure, India has recorded significant socio-economic transformation, with nearly 250 million people reportedly moving out of multidimensional poverty. The period has also seen major investments in digital public infrastructure, large-scale infrastructure development, welfare reforms and economic growth.
