Power disruption in Colombo due to breakdown at Athurugiriya sub-station

The electricity supply to several areas around Sri Jayawardenepura, Malabe and Hokandara has been disrupted due to a breakdown at the Athurugiriya sub-station, the Power and Energy Ministry said.

Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the power outage is currently being experienced in Athurugiriya and surrounding areas.

However, he said that measures are underway to restore the power supply.

Meanwhile, the power generation at the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Station has come to a standstill due to the failure of a diesel fuel tank. Due to the malfunction of the power station, 165 MW of electricity supply was lost to the main grid.

The Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Plant consists of a 110 MW gas turbine and a 55 MW steam turbine that operate simultaneously to generate 165 MW of electricity. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
