Pothuhera–Rambukkana Expressway section to be ready before 2028

Colombo, Sep 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Pothuhera to Rambukkana section of the Central Expressway is expected to be completed before the Kadawatha to Mirigama stretch, with work slated for completion by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April 2028, Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.

Speaking at the official ceremony marking the recommencement of construction on the Kadawatha–Mirigama section, the Minister said this stretch is expected to be finished within 32 months, by 2028. He added that the connecting roads around Rambukkana will also be developed alongside the expressway.

Minister Rathnayake also provided updates on other major road projects:

Approval is expected this year to begin construction of the Rambukkana–Galagedara section, with preliminary design work already underway.

The port access road, which is 98% complete, has faced delays for the remaining 2%, expected to be finished by mid-next year.

Work on the Ruwanpura Expressway from Ratnapura to Pelmadulla, previously halted from the Colombo side, has resumed. Construction from Ingiriya onwards is set to begin soon, along with plans to widen existing roads from Ingiriya to Ratnapura.

The Minister said that these projects aim to strengthen the country’s road network and improve connectivity across key regions.
