Postal employee accuses authorities of misleading public amid ongoing strike

Colombo, August 20 (Daily Mirror) - A protesting postal employee, addressing the media in his half-dressed uniform, accused the government of misleading the public with false information regarding the ongoing postal strike.

He claimed that authorities have failed to provide adequate salaries and allowances, while the Minister if Post and officials were “fooling employees and lying to the entire country.”

The employee also questioned whether a uniform could be stitched at the current allowance of Rs. 600.

“We have requested an increase in the uniform allowance, bicycle allowance and the permanent appointment of contract workers. Instead, authorities keep talking about fingerprints and overtime,” he said.

Revealing that only Rs. 600 is provided to sew uniforms and Rs. 250 as a bicycle allowance, he argued that these sums are far from sufficient. He further alleged that officials were spreading misinformation about the reasons behind the continuous strike.

The strike, launched on Sunday (17) with 19 key demands, has continued despite a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

Postal trade unions confirmed that the trade union action will continue.
