Possible floods in Malwathu Oya Basin



The Irrigation Department issued a possible flood warning for those living closer to the Malwathu Oya Basin.

While issuing a red colour flood warning message, the department said considerable rainfall has been experienced in the upper and mid-stream areas of the Malwathu Oya as of 4.00 pm today. 

The Nachchaduwa reservoir is now spilling at a rate of 3,700 cubic feet per second. 

By analysing the situation and river water levels of hydrological stations in Malwathu Oya, a warning has been issued of a possibility of a major flood situation in low lying areas of the Malwathu Oya valley in the Vengalacheddikulam, Nadu, Mussalei and Nanaddan DS Divisions. 

The roads already inundated may become highly vulnerable and dangerous for crossing. 

Residents and motorists in these areas are requested to vigilant in this regard.

Disaster management authorities are requested to take adequate action in this regard.
