Politicians then and now are directly responsible for the chaos in the country, Kalutara district Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kumara Welgama said.

During a meeting in Dehiwala, MP Kumara Welgama expressed his belief that all politicians, past and present, have contributed towards the current crisis, resulting in people's struggle to earn a livelihood.

He said that decisions made by politicians and government officials have led to the unfortunate situation where people are unable to provide three meals a day for themselves and send their children to school.

According to Welgama, corruption and bribery in the country have seen an increase, particularly after 1977. In the past, ministers were only receiving their ministerial salaries without any additional benefits. However, during J.R. Jayewardene's tenure, MPs were given the opportunity to import vehicles duty-free. Unfortunately, over 75 percent of them sold these permits, leading to a rise in corruption and bribery within the country.

MP Welgama said that while bribery taken by ordinary individuals receives attention, the issue of politicians engaging in corrupt practices often goes unnoticed.

To address this, he proposes giving young people an opportunity to minimize corruption and bribery and work towards restoring the country's economy. By promoting ethical practices and empowering the youth, it is hoped that the situation can be changed for the better. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Wonder what was the deal cost of the CTB Bus parts tender. Was it being dealt with or swept under the carpet. Paid Govt servants, have you’ll honestly done your duty or done duty for others sake?

It should be regarded as an honour and a privilege to serve the nation as an elected member. So remove all privileges attached to the post and pay one consolidated salary .That should draw in the right candidates.Have a website for each electorate to which voters in the electorate could post their comments on electoral matters. That will make elected members more accountable to the people who elected them.

This man Welgama thinks that people didn't know before this that the Politicians are responsible for the chaos in the country ! This is not a great revelation by Welgama .

    DOT Monday, 18 September 2023 05:26 PM

Not only politicians sir.GOSL officials also equally responsible for this disaster!

This is reality Monday, 18 September 2023 05:34 PM

This is a secret that the whole country knows. You have also been part and parcel on many occasions. Any person honestly feeling responsible has only ONE thing to do. What THAT is we don't have to spell out.

    Mahila Monday, 18 September 2023 10:26 PM

Because, if any MP claims they don't know, what to do, are simply 'Morons' and automatically become "disabled for re-election"!!?? Simply said INEPT!!????

An example of corruption and continuation of bankruptcy is voting for the health minister to continue to be in power from 113 parliamentarians and health knowing people are suffering no action from the president.

    Ram Monday, 18 September 2023 07:21 PM

Kumara Welgama doesn't mince his words. Politicians present and past responsible includes Kumara too. One of the few who always doesn't fear to call a spade a spade

Ram, Agree with you he is impeccably truthful and the illegal robbing and looting assumed unlimited proportions only after ascendancy of The Messiah to Power in 2004 and not ensuring adherence to or ‘ignoring’ the "Yearly Asset Declarations"!!!??? 'Appachche' is solely responsible!

What MP Welgama says about the catastrophe (!) that the politicians have caused in Sri Lanka is largely correct! However, it culminates in the corrupt, unscrupulous politics of the Rajapaksas, who have illegally enriched themselves in an incredible way from what belongs to the people! With them, corruption has become part of everyday life and monstrosities have been forced upon people that affect the existence of each individual!!! Welgama's last statements about youth and their behavior with a view to minimizing corruption are empty phrases and their instruction through new ethical maxims and "strengthening" (!?) is absolutely ineffective because nothing is said about it substantively!!! The only way to have an impact on young people is through exemplary role models, through ethically impeccable behavior on the part of politicians and practiced responsibility towards the nation, the country and the people!!!

    Dee Monday, 18 September 2023 09:29 PM

How can you empower youth? Youth are being let by a set of subversive elements!

Protest and scrap the present electoral system where even unknown stooges enter parliament even with bonus seats. People within there areas should be elected like the good old days prior to 77 era.

When the British left the country, we had enough foreign exchange with the dawn of independence in 1947, it was a downward trend, Bandaranaike's Singhala only policy, Srimavo 's schools take over, 1983 black July, three decade LTTE war, Rajapaksa's corruption saga, Srisena's 52 day illegal government, Easter Sunday attacks etc, culminated in bankruptcy era of Sri Lanka, but still these corrupt parliamentarians in power.

Pantha Kumaran Tuesday, 19 September 2023 12:43 AM

I totally agree with you. This will go on until such time we the voters wake up. When I was young I can meet a Minister and talk to him. Now I will not be allowed to see a minister unless I am popular. Country was ruled by crooks and they should take full responsibility for their activities.

    dana Tuesday, 19 September 2023 05:05 AM

Do we have to accept Welgama as nice,What he has done to bring to holt such vicious activities, he himself too profited out of it and seems he getting ready to deceive people of Kalutara targeting next election

    TAX-PAYER SINCE 1975 Tuesday, 19 September 2023 11:03 AM

DID NOT HE SELL HIS VEHICLE PERMIT?

Karunawathie nanda Tuesday, 19 September 2023 04:17 PM

How about you, Welgama? You were with Myna while he was destroying the country! You did not see anything as others - now what? You must pay LKR 100 million to SL people!!
