A number of sectors including political leaders, legal officers, security officers and police are patronising the underworld, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament today.
Winding up the committee stage debate on the budget, the President said all these sectors and the underworld have created a network which controls the state.
"All governments in the past gave in to this network controlled by underworld figures, but the NPP government will confront it," Dissanayake said.
"Around 73 T-56 weapons have gone into the hands of underworld gangs. We have managed to recover 35 of them. Other weapons will be recovered soon," he said.
He said six different gangs have been involved in the last six shooting incidents during the recent past.
Also the President assured that investigations into the Lasantha Wickramatunge killing, the assault on Keith Noyahr, the Easter Sunday attacks etc. are continuing at the moment.
"Fresh cases on these incidents will be filed soon. However, we will not reveal anything now. Revealing information from time to time will help the suspects escape," the President said.
