Police warn against using sky lanterns during festivities

Colombo, Sept. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police cautioned the public on the serious risks of fire associated with the release of sky lanterns during festive seasons and special celebrations.

While these lanterns may appear entertaining, they are propelled by open flames and can drift uncontrollably, potentially landing on sensitive locations such as fireworks sites, fuel stations, petroleum storage facilities, residential buildings, commercial properties or crowded public areas. Such incidents could trigger destructive fires, causing severe property damage and loss of life.

Authorities have particularly noted the release of sky lanterns at Galle Face Green in Colombo, warning that a single lantern landing on a high-risk site or densely populated area could have catastrophic consequences.

The Police urge citizens to exercise caution and responsibility, emphasisng that public awareness and careful behaviour are crucial to preventing avoidable tragedies and protecting lives and property.
