Colombo, Jan 19 (Daily Mirror) - A Special Investigation Unit is probing the tragic incident in Narammala where a 41-year-old man lost his life when police accidentally opened fire on him.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that acting on the instructions of Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Thennakoon, a special police team is already on-site conducting an inquiry into the actions of the involved police officers.

He said that initial findings have revealed that the concerned Sub Inspector had not adhered to proper procedures while carrying out his duties and was also in civilian attire during the incident.

The spokesman said the officer will face both disciplinary action and maximum legal consequences following a thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, the Public Security Ministry said that Police Headquarters is actively engaged in providing support to the victim's family.

Tensions escalated in front of the Narammala police station as a lorry driver fell victim to an accidental discharge from a sub-inspector's firearm last night.

It was reported that the police had ordered the driver to stop the lorry but the driver had allegedly defied the order. Police said the 59-year old Sub-Inspector and a Constable had chased behind the lorry and pulled it over for a spot inspection where the Sub-Inspector's firearm had discharged.

The driver who was critically injured was admitted to the Narammala Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Both the Sub-Inspector and a Constable involved in the incident have been arrested.

What obligation does the driver has to stop his vehicle when these so-called police dogs are in civilian attire? It could have been a hold up or even worse, The police spokesperson is now obliged to speak the truth because of the video footage. The shooting has been done with just one thing in mind and that is cold blooded murder. We will even take this matter to UNHRC if deemed necessary. Even the PTA does not give these scoundrels the right to go on a shooting spree at their will and fancy.

The weapon should be in a holster securely. should not be drawn if the victim was unarmed, remove all guns from trigger happy police, this is what they do flaunt their official weapon even when in civil. some licenced private gun holders who use their weapons for sporting purposes use their guns illegally when not at the range this needs to be strictly monitored too.

Srilanka police is the one of most worst public service of the our region. Specially least incidents related to the Yukkthi operation is part of the harassment to the public. Whatever says our minster and Act.IGP its its clearly proven that failure of the police department.what ever reason police can't fire the unarmed civilians that's common rule.Sri Lanka became a Killing filed of the Asia.

Fortunately someone has recorded the incident. Otherwise police definitely will say the driver was carrying drugs and justify the shooting.

The SI's firearm "accidentally discharged"??? and fatally wounded the victim??? What a load of BS from the spokesman of for these uniformed thugs who are most often drunk while on duty or high on drugs which they push?

This incident proves again that Sri Lanka is a police state where the uniformed men can kill their fellow citizens if they think so. Who will save the public from those devils in uniform…?

    Punchi Friday, 19 January 2024 07:31 PM

We have become habitualised in killing each other. This was prevalent in our 2500 year civilisation before the British arrived and has reestablished after the British departed.

There should be a periodic mental assessment test to assess the eligibility of the police to handle a weapon, taking into account his or her behavioral patern, attitudes, anger management levels, memory power, identification etc. There can be undiagnosed regards, depression patients in uniform.

    Nimal Saturday, 20 January 2024 03:06 AM

If they did a periodic mental assessment there would be no police personnel in SL.

If Minister Tiran Alles is a decent person, he should resign immediately.

How many incidents like this have happened in sl? Motorbike assassinations every month with precision and skill like they were trained for it, how many were actually criminals and not armed forces/police carrying out these hits? Was this cop pointing the gun at the man? While inspecting the lorry he was pointing it at the guy? Why should anyone stop for someone in plain clothes with a weapon? This is fishy, maybe police was angry he didn't stop, maybe he had alot of money to be stolen? What use is the police force when they are committing the most offences???

    Cherath Saturday, 20 January 2024 10:05 AM

As Nimal points out, what is the obligation for a driver to stop when someone in civilian gear is waving a gun from the roadside? No, this is ample proof that if you are not-of-the-filthy-rich class, you will be chased and gunned down like a stray dog. How can rupees pay for the loss of a father and husband?

Please don't be emotional and be fair! This officer has done llots of good things in past. Which were also circulated in social media.
