Police to implement strict checks on lawyers following court shooting

Colombo, Feb 19 (Daily Mirror) - Following the shooting incident inside the Hulftsdorp Court Complex, where underworld figure 'Ganemulla Sanjeewa' was killed by a gunman disguised as a lawyer, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya said that all lawyers will undergo inspections before entering court premises in the future.

The suspect, who shot at and killed Sanjeewa this morning inside the court chamber, fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Several police teams are ivestigating to apprehend the suspect.

It was reported that the lack of inspections on lawyers at the court was exploited by the shooter in today's attack. The Acting IGP assured that measures will be taken to enforce inspections at the court premises.

The Acting IGP said that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka has been requested to cooperate in implementing these security measures.

He also confirmed that permission will be sought from the relevant authorities to deploy armed personnel for enhanced security at court premises.

It is a well known fact that there are politicians, policemen and lawyers in the pockets of drug kingpins and organized criminals. This shooting was probably carried out with their help to protect the identity or identities of some former bigwig politician/s. The present government has got it's work cut out here but they along with law enforcement must get things under control or Sri Lanka will be the next Mexico.

As usual a reactive action only. Didn't the police know that everyone who comes to courts in black suit are not lawyers and that still a security check has to be carried out on everyone? In airports the pilots and cabin crew are not exempted from checking for that matter.

What is surprising is that this man fled the scene even after leaving the gun behind in such a high security area teaming with police officers. What you mean by check identity? Anyone can make a fake identity or steal a legitimate one. Why not install a simple scanner at the entrance and/or have police officers frisk each individual?

Why not accept the reality that there is a serious law and order situation which can get out of hand and take action island wide. Keep theories for later as to why it happened.Have strict rules for carrying firearms, then enforce them. Have security checks everywhere.
