Police to implement security, traffic plans for exposition of Sacred Tooth Relic



Colombo, April 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police Department is to implement special security programmes and traffic plans for the upcoming exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Dekma) at the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

Accordingly, public search operations, traffic control and roadblock duties will be carried out, and more than 10,000 police personnel, including 35 government-notified officers, are scheduled to be deployed for this purpose.

The exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic is set to start at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (18) and will end at 5:30 p.m. 

The exposition will continue from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. till April 27, starting from April 19. 

About two million devotees, including foreigners, are expected at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, and heavy security measures are to be implemented on these days.

Accordingly, entry for vehicles to the Kandy city has been restricted from tomorrow. Separate parking areas have been allocated for those arriving for the exposition, and special bus services have been arranged to transport them to the Sri Dalada Maligawa at a concessionary fare.

Vehicles arriving from Gampola and Colombo will stop at Getambe Junction, and parking facilities have been allocated at the Gatambe ground and along Gannoruwa Road. Parking facilities for vehicles coming from Kurunegala and Katugastota have been arranged at the fourth mile post. Parking facilities for vehicles arriving along Madawala Road have been arranged at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre parking area in Polgolla.

Parking facilities for vehicles arriving along the Matale Road have been arranged at Dharmashoka Mawatha from the Rakade Junction. Parking facilities for light vehicles have been arranged at the P.T. Rajan playground.

Parking facilities have been arranged at the Bandaranaike Vidyalaya playground in Pallekelle for vehicles arriving from Mahiyangana and at the Gurudeniya area for vehicles arriving from Badulla.

There will be no changes to short-distance and long-distance bus services operating through Kandy town, but these buses will be parked at the Rajapihilla bus stand and the bus terminal in front of the Bogambara grounds. No permission has been granted to park short-distance buses in the Kandy town.

Parking facilities will not be available for those in vehicles coming to Kandy for their day-to-day needs. These vehicles can be parked at the vehicle park (for light vehicles) near the Wewalpitiya ground, Sahas Uyana parking (for light vehicles), and Mahanama Playground-Getambe (for light vehicles). Buses can be parked in front of the Mahaiyawa cemetery.
