Colombo, May 26 (Daily Mirror) - A police sergeant attached to the Gokarella Police Station has been suspended following the circulation of a video on social media showing an assault on a civilian, the Police Media Division said.

According to the statement, the incident took place on Saturday night (May 24) when police officers stopped a man and a woman who were reportedly speeding on a motorcycle. During the encounter, one of the officers was seen assaulting the male rider, prompting public outrage after the video surfaced online.

The Kurunegala District I Superintendent of Police has launched a formal investigation into the incident.

As an immediate measure, the officer involved, a police sergeant has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.

The Police Media Division said that disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, reaffirming the department’s commitment to upholding professional conduct and accountability.

We should not let our police force become like the western countries where police brutality is common and punishment for such a simple slap on the wrist.
