Police launch night-time inspections to curb bus accidents

Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) - In response to the recent surge in road accidents involving buses, police have stepped up night-time inspections of long-distance passenger buses in an effort to reduce such incidents.

Police said the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) has instructed officers to be deployed at key points along major roads to conduct checks on vehicles, particularly long-distance buses operating at night.

The inspections aim to identify drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as well as those engaging in reckless or dangerous driving and other traffic violations.

Motorcycle-mounted police officers have also been assigned to assist in these inspections as part of the initiative.

This is a joke. If basic road dicipline is to be enforced it nees to be 24x7x365. There is so much crazy driving on our roads during daytime and the public often wonder how the buses (and tuks) get away with them. Just staggers belief that when th epublic see it so often, how the police don't. However if a vehicle crosses a white line th epolice al all over to pounce on them and issue a ticket. The condition of the much decorated smoke belching buses strangely do not catch the eye of the cops. An utter farce of what?

Great! Nothing like closing the barn door once the horse has bolted right? Had so many innocent lives to be lost in wain for our police to suddenly wake up? Reckless bus driving is a known danger on Sri Lanka Roads. `Equal Rule of law for all` is just a punch line that the new Govt uses - nothing beyond.

This isn't enough! Actions like these will become non-existent in a couple of months. Hefty fines and stiff jail terms plus the permanent cancelation of driving licenses must be the penalty for errant drivers and repeat offenders. In addition, a mechanism must be put in place to stop cops from accepting bribes from bus operators and drivers. One more suggestion, GPS devices could be installed on all buses to monitor and record speeding. These things are tiny and inexpensive.

Sorry situation. Something must happen for authorities to take action. Don't they know these on their own ?.Road discipline is at its bottom. Vehicles are parked on pavements, going on the wrong directions, buses and threwheels stop at any place on the middle of the roads to pick and drop passengers. Who is looking at these. Some big thing must happen for authorities to take note. Please wake up.

Firstly there should be a centralised training school to impart proper training to all aspiring public transport drivers and they should have refresher courses every two years and licence renewal coinciding with this refresher course. This training should include driving technique and driving etiquette as public transport drivers. This should include taxi drivers trishaw drivers and bus drivers.

Better to prohibit bus services in up country after 12 a.m, up to 5.00 a.m. This will reduce the chances for human error and driver fatigue to a good extent.
