Police fire warning shots to control tense situation in Hanguranketha



Police fired several rounds of warning shorts into the air after more than 200 people surrounded the Hanguranketha police station for not arresting a group of suspects.

Police fired into the air when they tried to forcibly enter the police station last night.

A resident of the Diyathilakapura area of ​​Haguranketha had died while undergoing treatment at the Kandy Hospital after being injured in an attack on Sunday.

The Hanguranketha police have conducted investigations and arrested one suspect over the assault.

Police said a group of men and women in the area tried to enter the Hunguranketha police station last night despite being informed about the investigations being conducted by the police over the death of the resident.

Police said the group behaved in an unruly manner even though investigations are underway to arrest 8 more suspects over the death of the victim.

Since group was becoming violent, two police officers fired about 38 shots into the air to control the situation, taking into consideration the damage that may be caused if they enter the police station and also for the safety of the officers on duty.

After the shooting, the group staged a protest on the Hanguranketha-Kandy main road. The Hanguranketha Police is conducting further investigations to identify the rioters and take legal action against them. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
