Five Under-19 hockey players of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia were sent to hospital for treatment, with at least one having to be admitted, after a group of individuals physically assaulted the team at the conclusion of a friendly match contested with Ananda College, Colombo, yesterday, at the Astro Turf field in Colombo 7.
S. Thomas’ College had won the friendly match 3-0, and the incident is said to have occurred fifteen to twenty minutes after the game where a group of individuals arrived from outside the premises and attacked the Thomian players and coaches, as well as nearby security guards.
It is alleged that a few players of the opposing side too were involved in the incident which involved the use of hockey equipment.
Ananda College Principal Lal Dissanayake, when contacted by the DailyMirror yesterday, said that he had heard of the matter, but was not aware of the details surrounding it, and could therefore not comment any further at the time.
