Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - The disruption in license plate printing has resulted in a backlog of approximately 15,000 vehicles awaiting number plates since May 1 this year, according to the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT).
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe said that the department has initiated a fresh procurement process to select a new service provider for vehicle license plate printing. The move comes in response to the ongoing delay that has impacted thousands of vehicle owners since May 1.
A total of 15 companies have submitted proposals to take over the printing responsibilities. Amarasinghe said that a technical evaluation committee is currently reviewing samples from the applicants to assess their compliance with quality and regulatory standards. The final selection of a new printing company is expected to be completed by August.
The DMT has officially informed the Inspector General of Police, all District Secretaries and Chief Secretaries about the delay in the issuing of number plates.
