Plastic debris from sunken MSC Elsa 3 continues to wash ashore in Sri Lanka



Colombo, August 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) said that plastic debris from the MSC Elsa 3, which sank off the coast of India, continues to wash up along Sri Lanka’s coastline.

Cleanup operations are currently underway on beaches in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Puttalam, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, and Galle districts, MEPA confirmed. The operation, launched on July 13, has so far seen the participation of more than 5,500 civilians.

The Liberian-flagged MSC Elsa 3 sank 38 nautical miles off the coast of Kerala, India, after a water leak. At the time, the vessel was carrying 643 containers.
