Plans to modernise Maradana Railway Station



Colombo, September 15 (Daily Mirror)- Plans are afoot to modernise the Maradana Railway Station in a manner that preserves its historical and architectural heritage, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

Maradana Railway Station, historically one of the most significant railway stations in Sri Lanka, is considered the second largest station in the Colombo District. 

In line with the Clean Sri Lanka programme, the renovation project of the Maradana Railway Station, implemented under the Dream Destination initiative, was launched this morning under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the PMD said.

In line with the government’s strategy to create “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” a national initiative has been launched to modernise 100 railway stations across the country.

The programme, implemented through public-private partnerships by the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation together with the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, aims to provide a sustainable, modern and standardised public transport system. Its objectives include enhancing public amenities at railway stations and transforming them into safe, comfortable and attractive spaces, contributing to a better quality of life for the people.

The project aims to create a clean and attractive railway station system across the country that ensures the safety and comfort of all passengers, including those with special needs.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who participated in the ceremony marking the launch of the Maradana Railway Station modernisation project, unveiled the commemorative plaque. 

The President also conducted an inspection tour of the station, visiting several areas including the

control room.

The modernisation work is planned to be carried out in a manner that preserves its historical and architectural heritage," the PMD said.
