Picnic turns tragic as girl drowns, teacher rescued at Nayaru Beach



Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - A 19-year-old girl drowned and two others, including a teacher, were hospitalized yesterday (March 31) after they swept away by the waves while bathing at the Nayaru Beach in Kokkilai.

According to the police, a group of 16 students and a teacher from an apparel training school in the Irappu area of Puthukkudiyiruppu had traveled to the beach for a picnic. 

While bathing, two young women were swept away by strong currents. The teacher who attempted to rescue them, was also caught by the current.

The Navy managed to rescue the teacher and one student, but the second girl drowned and went missing. 

Following a joint operation by the Police, Navy officers, and local fishermen, the body of the missing girl was found on the beach behind the Nayaru Naval base later.

The deceased is identified as a resident of Puthukkudiyiruppu.

The two survivors are currently undergoing treatment at Mancholai Hospital. 

Kokkilai Police are conducting investigation into the incident.
