Colombo, March 27 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities warn that lack of physical inactivity can cause non-communicable diseases, and that regular exercise is essential to maintain overall health and prevent these conditions.
Consultant Physician in Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr. Upul Madahapola, stated that being physically active can help control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.
Meanwhile, the disability associated with physical inactivity is a leading cause of colorectal cancer, stroke and coronary vascular diseases obesity.
He stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2020 guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour states that children between ages 5 to 17 years should do 60 minutes to moderate to vigorous physical activity.
Madahapola highlighted that being physically active can reduce the risk of falls, improve mental well-being, enhance sleep quality and strengthen muscles and bone health.
The leading cause of government hospital deaths due to Ischemic heart diseases, with 37 deaths reported in the 18 - 30 years age groups in 2024.
However, 1,431 deaths in the 46-56 age group, and 6,011 deaths in the 60 years have been reported in 2024.
