Parliament approves electricity amendment bill with amendments

The Electricity Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament today following its third reading, which was approved without a vote. The second reading of the Bill was earlier approved with a majority of 96 votes, with 121 MPs voting in favour and 25 against.

The Bill includes provisions to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) by unbundling it into several separate companies. The amendments aim to reform and streamline the electricity sector in Sri Lanka.

The government promised they wouldn't do this during the election campaign....blamed ot on the previous government for selling the assets there has to be a law gainst falls promises to gain votes...JVP the absolute scum !!!

Government is on track to achieve something great and its despicable that the SJB has voted against, due to sheer jealousy. Previous government tried to sell off natural monopolies Transmission and distribution assets, to their cronies and rob the state and its people. Now, restructure is being done the proper way, with generation open to competition. 70% of electricity cost is generation cost, so we can expect prices to come down in the next few years.

Based on unrealistic fuel price, ridiculous. JVP always opposed and sabotage using trade unions, and student unions to paralize the country. Similar reforms could have achieved much earlier based on real stats and handle post pandemic challenges much easily and independently, not writing IMF dictation.

Don’t talk rubbish, previous governments looked for commissions from Ministers downwards, were not interested in reforms. Their cronies made millions from private diesel generation. Only RW government pushed by IMF introduced reforms but they were also trying to sell everything for a pittance. Now it’s done properly and prices will come down in the next few years.

This experiment has been tried in other parts of the world to inject fast money into the coffers of the government from these sales. This was found to be detrimental to the public at large. However, if this experiment is done with Government Holding a large stake and the rest sold off. Then a reasonable competitive base can be formed for the benefit of the public. Hope, this government is sensible enough not to follow blindly what World Bank dictates.

This is one of the major blunders made by this government. This move does not help the people or consumers at all. If any one expect the price to come down, keep on dreaming. The cost of operating this foolish arrangement will go up by 30% or more during the second year. during the first year the Government will keep the prices at the current level for political reasons, but they will be compelled to increase the rates in the second year. Generation, Distribution and Retail companies will be driven by three corporate goals in addition to Trade union pressure and above all corruption. This model works very well in a country where the people are honest and patriotic but not in Sri Lanka.

If patriotism does not go with honesty, that opportunistic society faces what SL valiantly struggling now to combat with the same cross section of rulers and their political,social and religious visions, that led to the downfall of this country.

We would still admire a genuine opposition party which opposes bad legislations but at the same time we expect them to support bills which are beneficial for the people. We all know that the CEB is a mafia and this bill will help break this mafia. So why wouldn't you support it? Shame on you SJB...Disgusting politics.

If any business like CEB is operating as one unit, then given the number of levels that are there from electricity generation (including buying electricity from private power generators) there can be many open areas. NPP government by planning this, now approved has created a situation where there is no room for wrong doings and if at all does happen can be easily found out unlike now. My felicitations and best wishes to Government for taking vibrant action.
