Colombo, May 09 (Daily Mirror)- Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj said that the parents of Kotahena school girl has not made a formal complaint as yet despite requests to do so.

She told parliament that she even asked the child's parents to meet her with a petition but they have not done it either.

“Justice cannot be served through social media”, she said.

The Minister said this in response to a question raised by SJB MP Mano Ganesan yesterday.

Only the parents truly understand the repercussions their children face after experiencing the barbaric act of molestation—especially when it involves a female child. In this case, it happened to a 13-year-old girl. Most parents choose not to reveal such horrific acts committed by someone like a teacher against their child. The minister's statement, which assumes that parents will simply come forward to visit the ministry or the police, is unrealistic. You should know that molestation occurs daily in this country, but only a few cases are actually reported. Therefore, your approach appears naive and out of touch with reality. Even though reporting might happen in larger, more populated countries, in a smaller nation with a population of only around 20 million—where families are closely connected and communities are tightly knit—such incidents are not easily disclosed. It’s unrealistic to expect open reporting in such a context. Thus, Hon Minister, hope you will agree with me

Mr Professor, dont you witness the way the incident is used these hypocrite politicians for their benefit. Parents cannot disclose such matter fearing the future of the child and their status quo. But can you see what had happen now, the social media made it so public and its stinking matter. Such matters should be referred to the respective authority and necessary action to be taken by these authorities accordingly.

EITHER WAY, NO ONE MUST BE RAPED, SEX WITHOUT CONSENT IS RAPE, THE TEACHER SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS, EVEN IF THE YOUNG GIRL DIDN'T.

We have had governments of various shades in this country but until now there was one common theme, that is acting proactively on at least a few (or more) important issues. This one is different. It’s always reactive. Situations arise (shortages, daily crime, price escalation etc.) and the government reacts, goes defensive, blames predecessors or simply attacks those who raise them calling names. This is not a good way to govern. How long can they go on like this?

Waiting for a petition by the parents ????? It seems like a lame excuse for inaction. Of what use is this Ministry if it is paralised and has no clue what to do in the wake of such tragedies ? Perhaps the Ministry should be dissolved and it's responsibilities transferred to the Police who will at least take some action.

Do you think you would be in a frame of mind to come to a politician with a petition? When was justice ever served in a timely manner in this country? That criminal is walking free. The principal has done nothing. The PM is only asking for an explanation from the principal. Nothing has been done yet proactively by the ministry. You are waiting for the victim's family to initiate the work. Shame on this NPP government's handling of this case!

Government displayed their experiences of inaction and given flimsy excuses for not taking timely action. PM trying to explain with her traditional approach covering up vast areas to be tackled, without understanding the core issue. Her explanation was purely of academic research style.
