Kilinochchi , August 4 (Daily Mirror) - All forms of harassment, sexual harassment, violence, and undue pressure against university students must end immediately. She affirmed that the government is prepared to take the strongest possible measures to ensure student safety and dignity on campuses, Prime Minister and Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.
The Prime Minister made these remarks during a visit to the Kilinochchi campus of the University of Jaffna yesterday (3), where she held discussions with the university's Vice-Chancellor, academic and non-academic staff, as well as faculty members and students.
“While it is important that university students enjoy their freedom, it must be exercised with discipline. At the same time, that freedom should not be restricted unnecessarily,” she stated. “Universities are responsible for ensuring the safety, welfare, and proper learning environment for all students.”
She noted that although physical infrastructure and faculty improvements are ongoing in many universities, concerns remain about whether these institutions are fully equipped to support students’ academic journeys.
Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted that around 40,000 students enter Sri Lanka’s state university system annually after passing the Advanced Level examination. She stressed that it is the duty of university administrations to create secure and supportive environments for them.
The Prime Minister also paid particular attention to the pressing issue of student welfare at the Kilinochchi campus, including the lack of adequate residential facilities, clean drinking water, and reliable electricity. She instructed the District Development Committee to resolve the drinking water issue-unaddressed for years-within a month and ensure continued monitoring.
“A student graduating with a traditional degree must be able to face the future with confidence,” she said, calling for universities to grow as centres of research and providers of quality postgraduate education.
Finally, Dr. Amarasuriya urged greater cooperation between students and university administrators, emphasizing the importance of maintaining harmony within academic institutions.
